Huw's View

Hotel Don Diego provides attractive accommodation along with excellent service. It will suit both families and couples looking for a character hotel in a quiet yet beautiful location.

I would highly recommend upgrading to a Junior Suite as the sea views are part of the hotels appeal and a hire car due to its secluded location and to see more of the local area.

The panoramic hotel restaurant with picture windows and many character features serves dinner with a selection of international and local cuisine (extra cost).

There is a lounge piano bar with live music on some evenings in high season and a poolside snack bar.

There is a feature swimming pool situated right on the waterfront with a terrace furnished with sun loungers and parasols, a seating area and a pool bar to relax and savour the view over the bay to the islands of Tavolara and Molara. The adjacent small harbour has a jetty for boat excursions and a pathway leads to a tennis court with synthetic grass and a pretty private beach with complimentary sun loungers and parasols (first, second and third rows are reserved for Junior Suite and Family Room guests). The shallow waters and gently sloping sand make it perfect for swimming and for children to play.

There is also a fitness room, beauty centre with massages available (extra cost). The reception with multilingual staff offers guests hotel and local information, internet point and WiFi, babysitting and excursions including boat trips, scuba diving, kayaking and windsurfing (all extra cost).

Hotel Don Diego is just 14km south of Olbia and 2km from Porto San Paolo which has a few shops, bars and restaurants. The hotel is situated on the Costa Dorata, a quiet stretch of coastline with many coves and beaches to explore, azure blue waters and views of the islands of Tavolara and Molara beyond.

There are boat trips available locally to the island of Tavolara which is a limestone massif 5km long and 1km wide. A cove and beach can be found at each end of the island, Spalmatore di Fuori at the northeast, and Spalmatore di Terra at the southwest. Currently, the island is inhabited by only a handful of families and has a small cemetery and summer restaurant. The water around the island is a popular spot for scuba diving as part of the Tavolara and Punta Coda Cavallo Marine Preserve created in 1997.  In the 19 th and 20 th centuries, an imaginary state was set up on the island by the Bertoleoni family as the Kingdom of Tavolara.  After Italian unification, King Paolo actively sought recognition from Italy. During his reign, in 1868 the Italian government began operating a lighthouse on the northeast end of the island.  The present claimant is an Italian citizen named Tonino Bertoleoni, who runs "Da Tonino," a restaurant on the island.
