What is included in the full all‑inclusive package?

The All Inclusive Formula includes breakfast, lunch, dinner, alcoholic and non-alcoholic drinks, cocktails, unlimited snacks and gastronomic surprises at all bars (excluding premium products). Drinks include coffee, tea, soft drinks on tap, syrups, slushies, juices on tap, iced tea, draught beer, wines, sparkling wines, prosecco and spirits on tap (gin, rum, vodka, bitters, whisky, brandy, grappa), cocktails, aperitifs with snacks, morning and afternoon sweet specialities. All the facilities are included too including sunbeds on the beach, children’s clubs (3-17yrs) and group activities, fitness, classes & multisports and evening entertainment.

Are towels, club cards or smart cards extra?

Beach towels are €7 per towel + deposit but included in Prestige & Family Rooms. A Smart Card is required for purchases at the bars, restaurants, amphitheatre, reception, spa and for beach towels.

Where is the resort located and how far is the beach?

Is Serenas is situated on the north west coast of Sardinia between Castelsardo (20km) and Isola Rossa (12km), approximately 80km from both Olbia and Alghero airports. Badesi is the closest town (6km) from the resort, a market town with a selection of shops, supermarket, pharmacy, banks, cash point (Bancomat) and souvenir shops. There is a free local bus from Is Serenas to Badesi in high season.

Popular resort close to the beautiful bay of Chia on the southwest coast of Sardinia

Chia Laguna is a magical place where golden beaches lapped by a turquoise sea stretch far as the eye can see. The three hotels – each one different and unique – offer the very best experiences, activities and local cuisine. The recently refurbished Hotel Village is set in a perfect position to enjoy a relaxing holiday by the pools or on the beautiful beach with a great selection of restaurants and bars with evening entertainment.

Roberto from Just Sardinia recounts his holiday to Chia Laguna Resort in June 2025:

Our journey to Sardinia began with our arrival into Cagliari airport. After collecting our hire car, we headed straight south towards Chia Laguna Resort. Our anticipation was rising as we drove through the gorgeous and scenic country roads. In just under an hour we had reached our destination, the resort waiting for us tucked behind lush greenery with a backdrop of alluring coastal views.

First Impressions....

My first impressions were extremely positive. It is very apparent to me that the staff take pride in their surroundings as the resort is always clean, well-maintained and thoughtfully organised. We were greeted upon our arrival with warm and friendly hospitality. The staff took the time to explain all of the available services including the pools, restaurants, beach shuttle and evening entertainment. They made sure that nothing was too much trouble and answered each of my questions diligently. We were then taken to our room via an electric buggy which we were not expecting, but it was a wonderful, welcomed surprise!

Accommodation

Our room was comfortable, spacious and a fantastic space to relax in. The king-size bed was soft and the pillows in particular were cushy and enveloping – ideal for a truly restful and peaceful nights sleep. The bathroom was well-equipped with amenities, and the theme of cleanliness and outstanding maintenance carried throughout our room and the rest of the resort.

Pools & Beach

The main pool is large and inviting, the perfect way to cool down on a warm day. There is plenty of space in and around the pool area and the parasols are another great addition to cooling off and relaxing. The beach is nothing short of stunning. A small land train provided by the hotel takes you there in just a few minutes. Once on the beach, I showed my resort card and received fresh towels. We then got to choose from the available loungers to set up for the relaxing day ahead of us. The beach itself is proudly looked after by the staff and locals. It’s framed in natural beauty, surrounded by rolling hills that meet the soft dunes of the fine sand. The sea is transparent and turquoise, ideal for snorkelling. We swam amongst the fish in pristine, crystal-clear waters that could be mistaken for tropical waters. It was a truly magical experience.

Cuisine

One of the highlights during our stay was the delicious breakfast buffet. There was an abundance of food, all varied and excellent quality. Everything we tried was fresh and full of flavour and it was a fantastic way to start the day. There was something for everyone – sweet and savoury options, options for vegetarians and vegans and those with gluten intolerance. Fresh fruit, bread, yoghurt, juices and both hot and cold drinks were just a few of the choices in the buffet. Lunch did also not disappoint us at the poolside bar and restaurant, where we had a delicious hamburger and salad. The excellent quality continued from breakfast, and the flavours elevated a simple dish even further.

Local Area

As we wanted to explore the local area, we ventured out one evening for dinner and discovered Trattoria da Angelo, a charming spot in Chia that was highly recommended by the staff and locals. It was a divine and genuine treat, and we enjoyed a selection of fresh seafood starters followed by fregola with seafood, a traditional Sardinian pasta dish full of flavour and authenticity. The service was friendly, the atmosphere relaxed, and the total bill just €60 for two – we were blown away by the amazing value. I would highly recommend this restaurant.

Entertainment

Later that evening we were delighted by a live performance at the resort’s Piazza degli Ulivi, a shared outdoor space also open to the public. The venue was organised thoughtfully with comfortable seating, a bar and restaurant nearby. The show, titled ‘I Love Paris’, featured professional dancers, many of whom had appeared on the television talent shows. The costumes, music and choreography were all outstanding and top quality. I could tell they were proud to perform this show and their talent was incredible. We watched the show late into the night under a clear star-studded Sardinian sky, and it was a wonderful end to our day.

The Magic of Sardinia

After exploring both inside and outside of the resort, what struck me most about Sardinia was its authentic charm and simplicity. The local cuisine is exceptional (especially the fresh seafood) which is always expertly prepared and full of flavour. Every meal felt like a genuine experience, prepared with local ingredients and a lot of heart.

But Sardinia offers so much more than just good food. It’s a place that remains wild and unspoilt with no motorways – just winding country roads that lead you through hills, forests and remotes villages nestled in the hills. The landscape is breathtaking and the connection you feel to nature is profound. To compliment the landscaping is the glorious beaches, which are truly postcard perfect. Soft white sand dunes sit between the sea and the hills, forming a unique and almost untouched backdrop. The region is free from heavy development, making it an ideal retreat for those seeking peace and tranquillity. As the day winds down, the sky at night with barely any light pollution proudly shows the stars shining brilliantly.

What has been filmed in sardinia?

The Little mermaid (2023) - santa teresa gallura, castelsardo, cala moresca

Perhaps one of the more recent and well-known examples of filming that took place in Sardinia is Disney's The Little Mermaid (2023). This live action remake of the famous and critically acclaimed film, originally released in 1990, invites us back under the sea to watch Ariel’s story as she dreams of being human.

where was 'the little mermaid' filmed?

The majority of The Little Mermaid (2023) was filmed on the northern coast of Sardinia in Santa Teresa, where there are some beautiful beaches with clear turquoise sea, ideal for swimming and snorkelling. Fascinating rock formations carved by the wind add greatly to the background and atmosphere of the movie. Santa Teresa embodies natural beauty, making it the perfect choice for the setting of the film aligning with the theme.

Cala Moresca is a small bay on Golfo Aranci in the north east of Sardinia and was the setting for the fishermen’s village and the castle pier in the film. Cala Moresca beach is a secluded bay near Spiaggia Bianca, with two beaches near the end of the railroad tracks that lead to Golfo Aranci. Cala Moresca boasts dramatic cliffs and rock features, pine trees and golden sands.

Rena Majore Beach in Aglientu is where several important scenes between Ariel and Eric were filmed, including when Ariel saves Eric from the water, and where Ariel sees Eric’s castle for the first time. The soft golden sands, occasionally separated by rocky formations, and the crystal-clear blue sea made it ideal for demonstrating the intertwining worlds of humans and mermaids.

Castelsardo in the north west of Sardinia was the beautiful filming location for the prince of the film, Eric’s castle. It is a strategic landmark with an ancient citadel perched on the hilltop jutting out into the sea. Little cobbled alleyways wind their way up past shops and restaurants, adding to the towns authentic Sardinian aesthetic. The natural charm of the town shows up beautifully and elegantly throughout the film, and the majestic castle in the distance is in colonial style.

The streaming giant Netflix released Red Notice in 2021 after a tricky year of filming in 2020 due to the COVID-19 outbreak. The film follows FBI agent John Hartley as he works to identify a cunning and infamous art thief known as Bishop. Caught up in a heist, he joins forces with Nolan Booth, another famous art thief, who is also looking for Bishop.

WHERE WAS 'RED NOTICE' FILMED?

Towards the end of the film, the three return from a swim in the gorgeous shimmering sea to their yacht. They are soon surrounded by Interpol Agents and manage to escape just in time. This scene was filmed near Cartoe Beach in Dorgali and deserves a spot in the list of most beautiful beaches in Sardinia. Surrounded by large rocks overlooking the Gulf of Orosei, the sea is often shallow which makes swimming and snorkelling in these waters accessible.

Cala Luna is located halfway between the territories of Baunei and Dorgali. Sheer rock faces protect secret coves, hideaways and natural caves. It’s popular for nature lovers, fishing enthusiasts or people who simply want to paddle in the mesmerizing turquoise sea . It’s luxurious feel as a secret hideaway link to the film theme of mystery and extravagance.

James Bond is a popular series of films which began in 1962. They follow the many missions and adventures of the British Secret Agent 007, a highly skilled, quick witted and intelligent man.

The Spy Who Loved Me released in 1977 features Roger Moore portraying the iconic character on a mission to investigate the arch villain Karl Stromberg’s headquarters Atlantis, a huge amphibian structure located off the coast of Sardinia. The film features many iconic scenes, such as the intense driving chase scene along the coastline, followed by the underwater car scene, in which Bond’s car converts into a submarine. It is a cult classic and loved dearly by Bond fans today. Some parts of the wild car chase were filmed along the Costa Smeralda and on the country roads around San Pantaleo, but also in Alghero in the north west of the island.

where was 'the spy who loved me' filmed?

After an intense fight with Stromberg’s henchman in Egypt, Bond and his partner, fellow secret agent Amasova, travel to the port of Palau on the north east Sardinia. The vibrant town has a great selection of shops, a weekly market, restaurants and harbour with boat hire and boat trips out to the Archipeglao of La Maddalena. Iconic scenes from the film were shot here in the port of Palau including Bond driving off the ferry in his white Lotus Esprit 2.2 turbo (1976).

Bond and Amasova drive along the coastal road with views of the beautiful island Isola Santo Stefano to the Costa Smeralda, perhaps one of the most famous areas in Sardinia, to arrive at iconic Hotel Cala di Volpe.

‘The Emerald Coast’ is a name inspired by the azure colour of the sea, designed and developed by the Aga Khan in the 1960s to preserve and protect this earthly paradise. At the beginning of the sixties, the Costa Smeralda appeared as an untouched area without any roads, electricity, water or telephones. With Porto Cervo at its centre, the Costa Smeralda coastline stretches for 55km with a harmonisation between the Mediterranean architecture, natural landscape and seascape, encompassing more than 80 beautiful bays, coves and sandy beaches.

While traveling with his father, young Alec becomes fascinated by a mysterious Arabian stallion who is brought on board and stabled in the ship he is sailing. After a tragic sinking of the ship, Alec and the horse are the only survivors. He befriends the horse before returning to his home, where they begin training the stallion to race against the fastest horses in the world.

WHERE WAS 'THE BLACK STALLION' FILMED?

Sardinia was chosen for the island sequences of the film because of the spectacular remote areas of the coast. The first location was the town of Marina di Arbus on the rugged western coast of the island. A large expanse of fine golden sand 2km long, delimited by a cliff dotted with Mediterranean greenery was where several scenes were shot.

Costa Paradiso was a vital location as some of the most heartful scenes were filmed here, such as the starving stallion accepting food from the young boy for the first time, and majestic shots of the horse swimming in the sea. For the last sequence, special horses were imported from the swamplands of the Camargue in France, where an amazing breed has developed which is specially adapted for swimming in the sea. The name 'Costa Paradiso' says it all – a true paradise reflected in the natural beauty and wild charm found in the surroundings, the distant views and landscaped formations. Costa Paradiso makes for a fantastic day out, with the sea being ideal for snorkelling as it especially clear.

San Teodoro near La Caletta on the east coast of Sardinia was another site for filming. The beach was perfect with its mile-long stretch of fine white sugar sand and wide sand bar reaching far offshore. This also added extra safety levels when it came to handling and doing action shots for the horse. Hiding behind the dunes lies Stagno di San Teodoro marshland, which is home to many species of birds. The charisma of the town and beach add to the atmosphere of the film and exemplify the remote paradise where the pair find themselves lost.

catch 22 (2019) - olbia, capo testa, capo ceraso

Adapted from the classic Joseph Heller novel, this satirical series set between 1942 and 1944 follows Captain John Yossarian, a World War II bombardier, stationed on the island of Pianosa. He is an individualist who seeks to protect his own life by fleeing to the hospital since a ‘catch-22’ in the army regulations prevents him from being grounded for illness or obtaining leave. Throughout the course of Catch-22, Yossarian is trying to find ways to leave the army through new and ingenious ways.

where was 'catch 22' filmed?

This mini-series adaptation was filmed primarily in Italy, with key locations including Olbia and Santa Teresa di Gallura in Sardinia. These locations were chosen to amplify the settings of the novel, which is set during World War II in the Mediterranean theatre, primarily on the fictional island of Pianosa. Parts of the UK were initially scouted as stand-ins for Italy, until the team eventually settled on Sardinia as their base for filming.

The series is set in Olbia, with the main location being the decommissioned airport of Olbia-Venafiorita. It was a public and military airport which serviced the town of Olbia, and in the 1970s was replaced by the Costa Smeralda Airport. In the series the old airport stands in for the American airbase of Pianosa. The set was decorated with hangars, control towers, military tents and even American fighter planes. Olbia is the gateway to the aforementioned Costa Smeralda on the northeast coast with the international airport, ferry port, marina and interesting town of Olbia which overlooks the Gulf of Olbia and Tavolara Island. It has a great selection of shops, café bars, restaurants, and in high season, a night market with live music.

Funtanaccia in Capo Testa was used for showing downtime between missions on the show. Close to Santa Teresa, these are situated on the northern most tip of the island, enjoying lovely views over the Straits of Bonifacio to the island of Corsica beyond. Another destination close to Olbia is Capo Ceraso, a granite promontory rising between the city and the island of Tavolara. This enchanting area and its Mediterranean undergrowth is guarded from above by fighter planes in the television show. It’s highest part, Mount Maladromi, was once a military observation point, making the land ‘s history intertwine with the series.

Cagliari is the capital city of Sardinia and is an ancient city with a long history. It was first inhabited around 12,000 years ago and part of the Neolithic Revolution with a wide-ranging set of developments that were being set up independently across the world. Today, Cagliari is a bustling and vibrant city with friendly locals and historical buildings. Visit Poetto beach, a beautiful long stretch of fine sand and calm clear blue water. Explore San Benedetto market, one of the largest covered food markets in Europe that is colourful, lively and lots of fun. Enjoy traditional Sardinian delicacies with fresh fruit, fish, cheese, ham and olives. Cannigione on the north east coast is a popular holiday destination with a port and marina. Golfo di Marinella has a fabulous beach near the yacht marina of Porto Rotondo, a gorgeous bay with clear waters and white fine sand. Santa Teresa is a stunning town beach of Rena Bianca and the Spiaggia dei Due Mari double bay at Capo Testa . Both have wonderful white sand and turquoise sea surrounded by fascinating rock formations. The Costa Smeralda , or 'Emerald Coast', the most well-known area in the north east, stretches 55km with more than 80 stunning bays and coves. The famous beaches such as Capricciolo, Spiaggia di Principe and Baia Sardinia embrace the emerald colour of the sea that Sardinia is known for.

Marinedda beach is located on the headland near the picturesque fishing village of Isola Rossa. The town has a few restaurants, shops and a marina set on a rocky promontory surrounded by the sea with the alluring beach being an added attraction. Alghero has the pleasure of hosting a 5km stretch of sandy beach along the Lido and Spiaggia di Bombarde and Lazzeretto beaches are near Porto Conte. Located on the north west coast of Sardinia, 80km from Alghero, Badesi Mare has a fantastic white sandy beach with water sports, sunbeds and parasols for hire, and a few beach shops and snack bars.

Chia is famous for its beautiful beaches, with dunes as a backdrop to the beautiful white sands and turquoise sea. Behind the beach there is a large lagoon where pink flamingos come to breed. Occasionally dolphins can even be spotted off the shore. This beach has been voted the best beach in Europe by readers of the Daily Telegraph. Relax at Chia Laguna , a popular resort located close to the beautiful bay of Chia on the southwest coast of Sardinia, with a great selection of restaurants, bars, pools and of course the wonderful beach. Villasimius in the south east also has multiple beautiful beaches including a double bay with Spiaggia del Simius on the eastern side and Spiaggia del Riso on the other side. Yes! This is something we highly recommend, and an absoloute must-do when we visit Sardinia. There are many different types of boat trips, boat tours and even boat rental available across the island. Navigating Sardinia’s stunning coastline, islands and hidden coves by boat is an unforgettable way to experience its natural beauty. Embark on a dolphin-watching and snorkelling adventure to the island of Fiagarolo off the Golfo Aranci peninsular - enjoy a series of snorkelling stops, swim in clear blue waters and see the amazing marina mammals in their natural habitat.. Stay at Gabbiano Azzurro Hotel & Suites situated on a fabulous white sandy beach with Caribbean-like turquoise gently shelving sea.

A trip to go out of your way for, especially in the summer months, is a boat trip along the north east coast and out to the Maddalena Islands. Departing from Santa Teresa on the northern tip of Sardinia and from various ports along the coast to Baia Sardinia, 'Spagetti' boat trips follow a set route including stops at the Maddalena Archipelago, world famous for its crystal-clear turquoise anchorages and white sandy beaches on the uninhabited islands. Alternatively, take the ferry from Palau to La Maddalena, the largest of the islands with a thriving port and marina surrounded by café bars, restaurants and gelaterias. This small town also has a great selection of shops and interesting side streets to wander down.

For a more intimate and exclusive experience, charter a private boat for the day. Ideal for special occasions, these smaller motor cruisers or RIBS come with a skipper and host, ensuring a seamless and unforgettable adventure. La Maddalena, Sardinia

One of the most well-known sites is the Nora Archaeological Site in near Pula . The ancient town of Nora was a Roman settlement and was the first Phoenician city in Sardinia. The spectacular remains of this flourishing city can be viewed at the archaeological park of Nora with remnants of buildings intertwined with old roads, mosaics and a well-preserved theatre. The passionate and knowledgeable tour guides make learning the history of Nora extremely captivating and enjoyable.

Explore northern Sardinia by Trenino Verde (the Green Train) and combine your tour with a cruise across Lago di Liscia on a Mississippi-style riverboat offering spectacular views of the surrounding hills. A highlight of this trip is a visit to Sardinia’s ancient olive tree at Luras , estimated to be over 4,000 years old and considered one of the oldest specimens of wild olive on the island. Also visit local medieval villages in this area such as Aggius , or take a nature hike through the nearby Valle della Luna .

In the south of the island, Bastion Saint Remy is a striking majestic building located in Cagliari , one of the symbols of the capital city. Built between 1896 and 1902, it is one of the most important forts in Sardinia. In its early years, it hosted elegant banquets during the Great War and was soon transformed into an infirmary. During World War II it housed refugees who had lost their homes due to the allied bombings. Today, it is mainly used for hosting art exhibitions and with its long and varied history.

While in Alghero , take a scenic walk along the famous golden sea walls. Built in the 16 ^th century, they are a highlight of the town’s historic cityscape and is one of the few Italian cities that have preserved their walls. The high towers and walls were originally built as a defence for the town, overseeing several battles. Today, these ancient walls provide a breathtaking panoramic view of the sea – especially in the evening at sunset. This is fantastic accessible way to exploring the outskirts of Alghero old town, along with restaurants, cafés and bars that line the seafront. Located on the Coral Riviera, Villa Las Tronas Hotel & Spa was once a residence of the Italian royal family, who came to the villa for their holiday's in Sardinia until the 1940's. It was built about 1880 then in the 1920's was restructured to vaguely resemble a medieval castle and in 1961 the villa became an exclusive hotel.

In the second part of my 'What’s It Like in Sardinia' series, we’re exploring what Sardinia is like in September - weather, holiday experiences, activities and suggested itineraries.

Why go to Sardinia in September?

September is a fantastic time to visit the island with the sea still warm from the long summer, vibrant wildflowers beginning to bloom again and the evenings are cooler. The peak season crowds have eased and accommodation prices drop significantly at the end of August. If possible, consider traveling mid-week as flight prices are often lower. This makes September an ideal month to enjoy Sardinia’s beauty at a relaxed pace.

The September Climate

Sardinia experiences warm, sunny weather in September, with average daytime temperatures around 26°C (80°F) decreasing towards the end of the month and the sea at a comfortable 22°C (75°F). While the days are pleasantly warm, you might want a jumper for the cooler evenings. September also offers stunning sunsets, painting the sky in breathtaking colours. In 2025, the full moon falls on September 7th, rising around 19:30 -the perfect time to enjoy Sardinia’s magical landscapes under the moonlit sky.

Prices

As September arrives, Italy returns to work and many Italians leave Sardinia leading to a significant drop in accommodation prices -sometimes by more than 50%. For example, a Classic Room for two at the Hotel Marinedda Thalasso & Spa costs £3,621 on August 9th, but by September 19th, the price drops to just £1,725. Therefore September is an excellent time to visit, offering both fewer crowds and incredible savings on accommodation.

Su Gologone to Santa Maria Navarrese 2 nights:

This is one of our favourite drives on the island! Start at Su Gologone and head towards the tunnel leading to Cala Gonone . After passing through the tunnel, follow the winding SS125 up to Passo Ghenna 'e Silana , which sits at 1017 meters above sea level (over 3300 feet) in the Supramonte region of central Sardinia. The road offers breathtaking views throughout the journey. Spend some time at Passo Ghenna 'e Silana before heading to Baunei for lunch. This charming hillside town overlooks the coast and a great tip is to choose a café with a terrace to enjoy the view. After Baunei, continue on to Santa Maria Navarrese , a quiet town with a small marina and a couple of restaurants. It’s perfect for a peaceful stop and a two-night stay, with great walking opportunities nearby. Hi, I’m Huw , and if you’re anything like me, you’re probably sitting in the UK right now, looking out at the rain, dreaming of warm sunshine, crystal-clear waters, and long summer days. Every year, I get asked:

Well, let me tell you July in Sardinia is magical, and it’s one of mine and my wife Alison’s favourite times to be on the island.

Sardinia Weather in July

The Perfect Summer Climate

By July, Sardinia is in full summer mode. The days are long, the skies are blue, and the temperatures are just right - ranging from 21-32°C (70-90°F). With almost no rain, it’s ideal for a beach holiday.

The sea temperature? A blissful 23°C (73.4°F) -perfect for swimming, snorkelling, and watersports. Whether you’re taking a dip in the turquoise waters of the Costa Smeralda or paddle boarding along the coastline, the Mediterranean feels like a warm embrace.

Is Sardinia Crowded in July?

While some areas get busier, especially around Olbia and Cagliari, Sardinia never feels overwhelmingly packed. One of the things I love most about this island is that, no matter which season, you can always find a quiet cove or secluded beach to relax.

A Must-Do in Sardinia: Boat Trips Along the North east Coast

One experience you simply can’t miss in Sardinia is a boat trip along the stunning north east coast and out to the Maddalena Islands. There are several ways to do this, but a unique trip is hopping on a "spaghetti boat", a larger tour boat that serves a delicious plate of spaghetti for lunch while you cruise or anchor in a beautiful bay!

Departing from Santa Teresa at the northern tip of Sardinia and from various ports along to Baia Sardinia, these boats follow a set route, including stops at the breathtaking Maddalena Archipelago, famous for its crystal-clear electric turquoise waters and pristine beaches.

A Day Trip to Palau & La Maddalena: Your Ultimate Guide

If you’re exploring northern Sardinia, a trip to Palau and La Maddalena i s an absolute must! Palau, the gateway to the La Maddalena Archipelago, is a charming coastal town, and the best day to visit is Friday—perfect for visiting the local morning market before setting off on your island adventure.

Getting to La Maddalena

From Palau, hop on the ferry to La Maddalena , with tickets available at the ticket office at the end of the port. Ferries run all day and evening, taking approximately 20 minutes, shuttling back and forth between the Palau and La Maddalena. Just remember: if you buy a return ticket, you’ll need to return on the same ferry line.

Exploring La Maddalena & Caprera

Taking your car is a great option, as it allows you to drive around La Maddalena and cross the scenic bridge to Caprera, home to the Garibaldi Museum - a fascinating stop for history lovers..

If you prefer a more active approach, skip the car and rent a bike or e-bike in La Maddalena. This is a fantastic way to explore the island at your own pace, stopping for a leisurely lunch at Snack Bar Trinitá in the north of the island before continuing your ride.

Before You Head Back…

Before catching the ferry back to Palau, take some time to wander along the port and the charming streets along Via XX Settembre - a perfect way to end your day with a little local shopping. Or savour an Aperol Spritz at the Old Cafè in the square in front of the port.

A day trip to Cagliari

Cagliari, situated on the central south coast of the island, is Sardinia’s capital city and centre for commerce and industry. It is flanked by the beautiful Poetta Beach and bay, popular for international sailing events. The city is characterised by colourful medieval architecture, central Castello and atmospheric port. There are interesting streets lined with shops and restaurants, the National Archaeological Museum, art galleries and monuments tracing the island’s history.

Poetto Beach is the main beach of Cagliari and stretches for about 8 km, from Sella del Diavolo up to the coastline of Quartu Sant'Elena. and enjoy a drink or meal at one of the beach cafes and restaurants.

San Benedetto Market – One of the largest indoor markets in Europe, this two-story wonder is a food lover’s paradise, overflowing with fresh seafood, local cheeses, and Sardinian delicacies - a true sight to behold!

For a sophisticated lunch near Cagliari, Lo Scoglio, looks towards Capoterra and the city of Cagliari - great for seafood and dining with the locals.

Visit Alghero

Many towns and ports throughout Sardinia from July to the end of August have night markets every evening, great for an after dinner stroll and holiday shopping.

Sardinian beaches have been compared many times to the Caribbean but closer to home! In the last few years there has been a growth of beach bars and beach clubs on the island. One of our favourites in the north is Paradise Beach in Rena Majore great for a sundowner and on the beach where the latest version of “Little Mermaid “ was filmed .Martini Beach at Rena di Ponente, Capo Testa is great for cocktails and a sun soaked long lunch.

Both these beach bars enjoy the most fantastic position to watch mesmerising Sardinian sunsets!

Phi Beach in Baia Sardinia is a stunning open-air beach club and nightspot, renowned for its breathtaking sunset views, vibrant atmosphere and world-class DJs, perfect for sun downers on the Costa Smeralda.

Sardinia's best Kept Secret - Wine!

No trip to Sardinia is complete without indulging in the local exceptional wines. While Sardinian wines are not widely available in the UK, they are renowned in Italy to be amongst their finest labels. From bold red Cannonau to crisp white Vermentino, the island’s unique climate and ancient winemaking traditions create truly unforgettable flavours.

One of my personal favourites is Vermentino from Capichera - a beautifully aromatic white wine with fresh citrus notes and a mineral finish, perfect for sipping on a warm evening. Meanwhile, Alison swears by Cannonau, Sardinia’s signature red, known for its rich, full-bodied character and deep, fruity flavours.

The best way to experience Sardinian wines? A vineyard tour and tasting session! Many wineries across the island welcome visitors offering the chance to stroll through picturesque vineyards, learn about traditional winemaking methods and, of course, sample some of their finest bottles. And the best part? No matter where you are in Sardinia, you’re never too far from a local vineyard waiting to be explored.

Restaurants

Of course, Sardinia has many restaurants , from simple Pizzerias to extravagant gourmet establishments in Port Cervo. There are also many Agriturismo’ s (farm restaurants) to sample delicious traditional cusine - there are too many for me to list, however our favourite is the La Colti near Cannigione - well worth a visit but don’t forget to book in advance.

Exploring Sardinia by TRENINO VERDE: A Scenic Journey Through Nature and History

For a truly unique way to experience Sardinia, hop aboard one of the island’s "Green Trains" , a network of historic railway routes that wind through the breathtaking countryside at a leisurely pace. These charming trains offer a glimpse into a different side of Sardinia , far from the bustling beaches and tourist hotspots.

The Green Trains have several routes throughout the island, taking passengers on a slow, immersive journey through rolling hills, dense forests, and picturesque villages . Along the way, you’ll experience the untouched beauty of Sardinia’s rural landscapes and its rich cultural heritage.

In northern Sardinia , you can make your train journey even more special by combining it with a ride on the Mississippi-style riverboat "Pollux" . Cruise across Lago di Liscia offering spectacular views of the surrounding hills and is a perfect complement to the train ride.

One of the highlights of this trip is a visit to Sardinia’s ancient olive tree , estimated to be over 4,000 years old ! Standing beneath its sprawling branches is a humbling experience, a true testament to the island’s deep-rooted history.

Festivals and Events in Sardinia in July

Across Sardinia, throughout the year, you'll find a wide range of festivals that offer a glimpse into the island's rich traditions. These events showcase colo urful traditional costumes, local crafts, lively music, singing, and dancing, along with delicious regional dishes at food stalls.

Most Sardinian festivals have religious roots, while others mark important events like the harvest. There are also many gastronomic celebrations tied to local produce, such as the Artichoke Festival in Uri in March and the Cherry Festival in Nuoro in June. Additionally, equestrian events, like Sa Sartiglia Carnival in O ristano (February)

This classic Sardinian hotel with stunning sea views is situated right on the beautiful beach in Baia Sardinia.

The rooms are typical Sardinian style and would recommend upgrading to a sea view room to make the most of the stunning outlook. There is no pool but the sea in front of the hotel is very clear turquoise, ideal for swimming and snorkelling.

We think the Club hotel Miramare Restaurant is one of the best restaurants on the island with stunning views and definitely the best Matre’d.

Santa Teresa has a central piazza, ideal for watching the world go by whilst enjoying a delicious gelato (ice cream) or an authentic espresso or cappuccino.

The town beach (reached via a steep hill) and the beaches at Capo Testa (approximately 3km) are some of the best on the island. There are stunning coastal walks with views to Corsica and the Valley of the Moon with amazing rock formations to explore.

Ferries to Corsica leave from the port (taking approximately 50 mins) as do boat trips to La Maddalena islands and marine nature reserve, both well worth visiting.

It's just a short walk from the main Oasis Pool, Piazza Luisa, and the beach! Very central so ideal if you have little ones that struggle with a long back in the sun. We loved the variety of pools and the incredible children's facilities. Whenever we got too hot by the pool or beach, we would relocate to the air-conditioned rooms in Children's Wonderland. This area offers a range of activities for all ages, and our little one absolutely adored the Barbie house, filled with dolls and accessories to play with until it was time to go to the aquapark! My partner's highlight was definitely the food. As big foodies, we indulged at the high-standard buffet at the Cavaliere Restaurant. We also enjoyed the fantastic entertainment at Piazza Luisa, with the mini disco starting at 7pm, followed by a main band performance later in the evening. If you get the chance, I highly recommend booking a dinner reservation at Le Dune. The food is wonderful, and the setting is beautiful, especially during sunset. Overall Forte Village really does have it all! We are looking forward to returning in September to enjoy more activities, such as bowling and go-karting!”

Nestled along the rugged coastline of Sardinia, the charming town of Cala Gonone serves as a gateway to some of the most breathtaking coastal scenery in Italy. Our adventure began at the picturesque harbour of Cala Gonone, where the azure waters of the Mediterranean glistened in the morning sun. We had booked a private boat tour (through Hotel Brancamaria ), ensuring an personalised experience. Our boat captain, a jovial local with a deep knowledge of the area, welcomed us on board and briefed us on the day's itinerary.

The boat sped away from the harbour and we soon found ourselves surrounded by towering cliffs that define the Gulf of Orosei. As we ventured deeper into this rugged landscape, the captain steered us towards hidden coves only accessible only by boat. Crystal-clear waters lapped against the rocky shore, and we couldn't resist the temptation to take a refreshing dip. It felt like our own private paradise.

One of the highlights of our boat trip was the opportunity to explore the mesmerizing sea caves and grottoes dotted along the coastline. Our captain skilfully navigated into the Bue Marino caves, named after the monk seals that used to inhabit them. Inside, the shimmering emerald waters created an other-worldly ambiance. Stalactites and stalagmites adorn the cave ceilings, casting surreal shadows as we explored deeper into the darkness.

Our boat trip continued to the furthest point of Cala Goloritzé with an incredible limestone pinnacle and the most crystal clear aqua water you've ever seen. We then came back to Cala Mariolu where we disembarked onto a white sand beach and had a wonderful swim in the electric blue sea.

Our boat trip included a stop at a secluded beach, Cala Sisine, where we enjoyed a delicious Sardinian picnic prepared by the boat crew. With our feet in the warm sand and a glass of local wine in hand, we savoured the fresh seafood and traditional cheeses while taking in the panoramic views of the rugged cliffs and the pristine sea. It was a moment of pure relaxation and bliss.

Cala Luna is a name that resonates with beauty, and it lived up to its reputation. Our boat anchored in this idyllic bay, and we had a last opportunity to dive into the turquoise sea. The sea was so clear that we could see colourful fish darting around us. It was a surreal experience, and the perfect spot for snorkelling.

As the day began to wane, we headed back towards Cala Gonone. The setting sun bathed the cliffs in warm, golden hues while we sipped Sardinian limoncello and felt grateful we had such amazing weather to witness such natural beauty. The boat trip had exceeded our expectations in every way.

A boat trip from Cala Gonone is more than just a journey, it's an exploration of nature's wonders, a taste of local culture and a feast for the senses. As we disembarked back at the harbour, we knew we had experienced something truly extraordinary. We highly recommend this amazing adventure along the enchanting east coast of Sardinia. We had been meaning to do this boat trip for years after having many pictures of this coastline on the front cover of our brochures! And it didn't disappoint.

Sardinian cookery is bursting with intense, fruity and aromatic flavours and offers a rich repertoire of dishes for a memorable culinary experience.

Traditional Sardinian cuisine tastes of the island itself with fish from the sea, herbs from the mountains and fruit and vegetables ripened in the warm Mediterranean sunshine. Seafood and wild game give strength and distinction to meals with different breads and local wines being the essential basics.

There are many typical Sardinian Agriturismo restaurants that usually serve a set menu of local Sardinian dishes including pane carasau (paper thin bread baked with olive oil and rosemary) Sardo ham, sausage and Pecorino cheese, homemade pasta such as ricotta and spinach ravioli, farm reared suckling pig (porcheddu) roasted with garlic and rosemary potatoes and followed by traditional seadas (pancake) filled with lemony Pecorino cheese and drizzled with orange flavoured honey accompanied, of course, by local wines. Make sure you try a glass of Mirto or Limoncello - the local digestivo!

La Colti Agriturismo is immersed in Gallura in the north east of Sardinia in a countryside setting yet within easy reach of Cannigione and the Costa Smeralda. This rural oasis offers an authentic taste of Sardinia enjoyed in the rustic-chic farmhouse courtyard with traditional Sardinian decor featuring handcrafted ceramics, woven textiles and weathered wood.

Huw & Alison from Just Sardinia and friends were lucky enough to dine at La Colti in August. The tables were set beneath the soft glow of rustic lanterns and the evening began with a selection of Sardinian appetizers, known as antipasti. Plates of pane carasau were served alongside an assortment of cured meats, olives, and cheeses. The flavours were bold and earthy, a reflection of Sardinia's rugged landscape and Mediterranean influences. A bottle of local Vermentino wine was uncorked, its crisp and citrusy notes pairing beautifully with the antipasti. The group raised their glasses in a toast, savouring the moment and the anticipation of what was to come.

For the pasta course they were treated to Zuppa Gallurese (typical dish similar to lasagna), ravioli di ricotta al pomodoro and homemade malloreddus, Sardinia's signature pasta, served with a hearty wild boar ragu. Next was the arrival of the Sardinian suckling pig, known locally as Porceddu, roasted to perfection over an open fire, the skin crisped to golden perfection by the open flames, the taste of Sardinia captured in each bite, served with a side of patate arrosto providing a delicious contrast to the rich, smoky flavours of the pig.

The attentive local waiting staff related stories of Sardinian culinary traditions including the art of roasting porceddu over an open fire, a practice that dated back generations and was often the centre piece of Sardinian celebrations. It was an evening of cultural immersion, with the food becoming a bridge to understanding the history and traditions of the island.

Dessert was a sweet finale featuring Seadas, a Sardinian pastry filled with local pecorino cheese and drizzled with honey, along with a glass of homemade Mirto (a traditional liqueur made from the berries of the myrtle plant and the herbs rosemary and juniper) - do try it! It was a fitting end to a meal that had celebrated the essence of Sardinia's culinary traditions.

Huw & Alison commented that the evening was an amazing Sardinian cultural experience and highly recommend visiting an Agriturismo restaurant during your stay on the island. “It feels like stepping into a Sardinian Nona (grandmother) cozy kitchen, where generations of recipes have been lovingly prepared”.

La Maddalena Island is the largest of 7 islands that make up the Archipelago of La Maddalena and can be reached by regular daily ferries in approximately 15 minutes from Palau on the north east coast of Sardinia. There is a thriving port and yacht marina surrounded by little café bars, restaurants and gelaterias and it is a wonderful place to stop to watch the boats and the world go by. The town has a good selection of shops and attractive side streets. There are several cycle rental shops opposite the ferry port with a choice of bikes from €15 per day, €20 for a mountain bike or €30 electric bike (helmets available).

La Maddalena Island is a relatively small island, covering just 20 square km, making it perfect for cyclists to explore in a day. There is a panoramic circular road with spectacular views with access to some superb beaches and Caprera Island over a bridge. The island's terrain varies from rolling hills to steep climbs offering breathtaking coastal views.

Your bike ride will begin in the island's main town, La Maddalena, where you can cycle along the harbourside alongside yachts and motor boats with various options for a boat trip to the other islands of the archipelago. As you pedal along the winding coastal road, you'll leave the town behind and be treated to panoramic vistas of crystal-clear waters, rocky shores and fragrant Mediterranean flora. It is about 4km from the port to the bridge to access Caprera island with the option to cycle amongst the machia with azure sea either side of you and to take a break to have a dip in the sea at one of the island's numerous hidden coves. From the bridge is about 3km if you wish to cycle to the Museum of Garibaldi, the Italian patriot and freedom fighter who lived in the 19th century and was one of the fathers of Italian unification.

Back on La Maddalena, from Ponte di Caprera the panoramic road heads up the east coast to Cala Spalmatore, where cyclists can relax, sunbathe and swim to cool off. These idyllic spots offer the perfect opportunity to savour the island's natural beauty and rejuvenate before continuing your cycle trip.

The Panoramica road then heads over to the north west coast passing the pretty Porto di Cala Capo Ferrari and on to Spiaggia del Cardellino. It is then worth a side trip to Spiaggia di Bassa Trinita where there is a little bar for snacks, refreshments and an another good place for a beach and swim stop. Cycle back on to the main road and head south past the Panorama Guardia Vecchia which is one of the highest points on the island with amazing views. The road then heads to the west coast and it is worth cycling down to the Altare della Madonnetta with fantastic sea views across to Spargi island, Isola Budelli, Razzoli and Santa Maria with Corsica beyond. Back on the road, wind your down to Cala Francese and onto Spiaggia di Punta Tegge, the last stop before cycling along the coastal road back into La Maddalena town and port.
